Thought it would be interesting to archive some old writings I’ve published all over the internet. It’s a great laugh for me but it’s also a time capsule of who I was then and what I was thinking about at that time. Some of these writings are simply just points of pride. Last updated 5/17/2016.
- The Legend of Toonami (2008): A great article I wrote as the president of my high school’s Anime Club. I have a lot of reverence and pride in my time as the club’s leader. It was extremely special to me. This piece examines how the club members and I felt about Toonami during the last decade. It was a glorious run but little did we know it would make a return some day.
- Dragonball Kai Episode 1 Review (2009): Back when DBZ Kai aired in Japan I did a couple of video reviews of the first few episodes. These years were the height of my DBZ fandom. The review of the first episode came after seeing it live on Japanese television through an online medium. It’s surprisingly decent considering I was in high school and not very refined yet.
- Anatomy of a Hipster, Pg. 16 (2010): Came across this from my high school journalism class. Hopefully I can find some more pieces from that time but this one got me a gallon of haterade. It’s still extremely funny now and I’m pretty impressed by how well it reads years later. Some of my old work looks terrible now but this one showed great production. Maybe you’ll get a laugh from it too. It’s harmless roasting.
- Reflecting on Oceana’s “Birth.Eater” (2012): This piece not only reminds me of a great record but a time and place before the next chapter of my life. Oceana’s second record will always have a cult following of old scenesters like me. It’s timeless and reflects themes I haven’t seen elsewhere before or since. I also wrote this at a time before my first long term relationship when I thought I’d always be alone.
- Joyce Manor “Collection” Review (2012): I don’t think this review shows anything special about my writing but it got plenty of attention. Posted on an old music blog I did with some close friends, it received the most Tumblr notes of any post we had on our blog. The subject of Joyce Manor’s music connected with our audience and I successfully feed them what they would have liked about that record.
- Roomrunner @ The Smell (2012): Great show during a very interest time of my life. The review also got me in hot water with one of the band’s I objectively reviewed. Fun night, I saw one of my favorite bands before their first full length came out, and it was fun dealing with an angry band bitching at me on Facebook.
